ABOUT CARL

Listen, if someone can’t figure out what you do within 5 seconds of landing on your home page, you’ve lost them.

It can be as simple as that.

And this time of year – spring – always reminds me of these things that could use a little update or refresh.

Sitting here writing this while we have a snowstorm and closed interstates… after last week being able to walk around in a sweater is wild.

But, Midwest. lol.

And it also makes me so ready for spring.

I don’t know about you, but I love the in-between seasons. Not the extreme cold, not the sweltering heat – just that sweet spot where things start to feel new again.

Where you swap your wardrobe, open the windows, grab a seasonal drink, and everything feels just a little lighter.

Here’s the thing most people don’t realize:

You can do that with your brand too.

If your website has been feeling a little stale lately, you probably don’t need a full redesign.

You just need a refresh.

Here are the first three places I always start 👇

1. Refresh Your Homepage Headline

Your homepage headline should immediately answer:

  • Who you help
  • What you help them do

If someone has to figure that out, your website is already losing them. This is one of the fastest ways to make your brand feel more current – without touching your design. Sometimes updating just your headline and your intro paragraph and make the whole webiste feel new.

And if your brand still doesn’t feel cohesive after that, it’s usually not just the words—it’s your visuals too. Your color palette plays a huge role in how polished your brand feels. I break that down (with examples) here → [How to Expand Your Color Palette]

Want a quick upgrade? Try swappin’ in

  • a new photo
  • a short video
  • slightly reorganized sections

It can feel like a completely new website.

Not all photos are created equal, though. The difference between “this looks fine” and “this feels like a real brand” usually comes down to direction. If your photos aren’t hitting, start here → [Lifestyle vs Brand Photography]

2. Remove Anything Outdated

Outdated content quietly makes your brand feel neglected. Things to look for:

  • old services
  • expired promos
  • irrelevant offers
  • blog posts that no longer reflect your work

Give yourself 10 minutes and ask:

“Would I confidently send someone to this page today?”

If the answer is no, update it, archive it, or delete it.

No hesitation.

Baaaiiiii 👋 See ya never.

3. Improve Readability

A lot of websites don’t actually have a design problem. They have a clarity problem. If everything is competing for attention, nothing stands out. Try this quick fix:

  • shorten paragraphs
  • add more spacing
  • use clear, bold headings

Your site should feel easy to scan—not like a wall of text people have to work through.

Most Websites Don’t Need a Redesign

They just need a few intentional tweaks.

A little clean up.
A little breathing room.
A little clarity.

Think of it like swapping your winter wardrobe for spring.

Same you – just styled better.
