Build a brand you love!

From basements and kitchen tables to wherever this is

Hey, Carl! wasn't built in a boardroom. It was built between homeschool lessons and snack breaks.

The name isn't a gimmick. It's Grandpa Carl. While I never got to meet the guy, I grew up with his name as well as Carlene, mostly called Carly, Carlos, Carls, Charlie - and somewhere in all those nicknames, I learned that a name carries personality. That stuck.

I started Hey, Carl! with a paintbrush, a camera, and two kids at the kitchen table. The whole point was to build something that fit around life, not the other way around. Two VIP days a week was the capacity, so the whole business had to work within that. And it did.

This isn't my first biz, either. Since 2010, I've been turning bold ideas into brands that creative entrepreneurs genuinely love showing up for. The kitchen table's still involved as are the Oreos.

Bold color palettes that make people nervous, boxing (the ring misses me), Oreos as a food group, clients who show up ready, a good discovery call where I can already see the brand before we hang up, , Midwest summers, Daisy the very senior dog

Brands that blend in on purpose, clients who just want someone to execute (strategy first, always), vague briefs with no materials (the blank canvas can work - but it's a whole thing), timelines that don't respect either of our lives, ugly fonts (obviously)

Hey, Carl! at a glance

Ask Me About

The Hey, Carl! origin story, what it looks like to build a business around your life (not the other way around), the time I rebranded so I could homeschool, and whether boxing is as fun as it looks. (It's more fun, and getting punched in the face doesn't hurt as much as you'd think.)

Unpopular Opinion(s)

Your logo isn't the problem. Matching your brand to your "aesthetic" isn't a strategy. Homeschooling is one of the best things I've ever done and I'd do it again tomorrow. Oreos are absolutely a meal, pineapple belongs on pizza and pickle juice is a drink.

In My Spare Time

Watching my girls do things I never expected them to love. Finding the local coffee shop in any city I visit. Reading or listening to a solid horror story. Jamming to music. Thinking about getting back in the boxing ring. Starting a project before I've finished the last one.

An Ideal Evening Looks Like

Dinner that I didn't have to plan, one of these: a good show or movie, game night, book, self care, and lastly, in bed before 10. No notes.
