ABOUT CARL

Somewhere between ‘I’ll just whip something up in Canva’ and ‘I need to hire a $10k branding agency and sell my first born child’, there’s a decision most small business owners make a little too quick and fast. It’s a decision typically done at 11pm, with 100 tabs open, a handful of those deep into a logo maker and yelling at AI ‘that’s not what I mean!’, questioning their life choices. So. Let’s talk about when to hire a designer and how much it’ll cost in 2026.

What does a logo cost in 2026, what do you get with the price, and how do you know if hiring a designer is the right call for where your business is at right now (not where you hope to be in 5 years, we’re going to table that convo for a minute).

The price ranges, no gatekeeping

Here’s roughly what you’re looking at across the spectrum for logo design”

  1. DIY tools (Canva, AI, logo makers): $0-$50
Fast, super fast turn around time. Like a couple hours max. This can be genuinely useful for testing a business concept before you’re ready to invest in a solid brand, or for a side project that doesn’t need to carry any weight yet.
  2. Freelance designer: $500 – $2,500
Entry-level freelancers tend to land around $300-$500. I know that’s where I started out at, but also the economy was slightly different back then (I swear I’m not a dinosaur), but I’d imagine the cost average is still roughly the same. For designers with some experience behind them and a solid portfolio, I’d expect around $1,500 – $2,500. Turnaround time is likely 1-4 week. This is the ‘I’m serious but not enterprise’.
  3. Design agency or studio (full brand identity): $3,000 – $10,000+
This is where Hey, Carl! lands, and it’s not ‘just a logo’. You’re paying for strategy, market positioning, a full visual system, and someone thinking about how your brand needs to function, not just look cute on a moodboard. Timeline for this can vary and can be anywhere from 2-12 weeks depending on the scope.

If you’re picturing a chart with ‘cheap and bad’ on one end and ‘expensive and good’ on the other, it’s not quite it. The variable isn’t quality, it’s strategy. I’d argue a $40 Canva logo can look good. What it can’t do is tell you why that says the right thing to the exact person you’re wanting to reach and you’re playing in the sea of same. I’d be willing to bet my left tit (men can say nut, so I say tit), there’s at least 100 other brands and businesses with the same logo design, just a different name.

When DIY is the right call for you

Not a consolation prize, but sometimes DIY is the perfect fit:

  • You’re testing a business idea and don’t know if it’ll stick around long enough to need ‘real’ branding or if you’ll stay interested in it long enough
  • You need something today for a farmers market table or a one-off pop-up
  • Budget is genuinely zero right now (no judgement or shame), and zero brand presence is worse than an imperfect one
  • You already have a brand strategy and guidelines, and just need to DIY some new assets.

When it’s time to hire it out

  • You’re embarrassed to hand someone your biz card or send them to your website. (If that sentence hit too close to home, that’s the sign)
  • Your current logo doesn’t hold up or translate in different sizes, on different backgrounds, or across different platforms without looking wonky.
  • You’re about to invest some solid money in the next stage of business – a launch, rebrand, bigger ad spend etc. – and you need your identity to be doing its job, not working against you and causing confusion or pushing people away.
  • You’ve outgrown ‘good enough’ and you can feel it every time you post something brand-adjacent instead of on brand.

The middle path

Listen, you don’t have to choose between ‘$40 and hope’ and ‘$8,000 and wait six months’. A brand identity package gets you a strategist thinking through positioning and execution: logo, color, type, the whole system, without the agency-sized price tag or timeline. At Hey, Carl! (that’s where you’re at now!), brand identity starts at $5,500 with a logo design wrapped into a one-week turnaround (not the 4-12 week industry norm), because a slow process isn’t always a mark of quality, it’s just a mark of multiple projects and layered deadlines and a slower process.

If you’re not sure which lane you’re in (DIY, freelance or let’s just do this right), that’s a 5 minute convo with yours truly. Book a call today!
