ABOUT CARL

AKA: What happens when Canva chaos meets zero proofing policies.

There’s a certain thrill to DIY-ing your brand. The freedom. The creativity. The adrenaline rush when you launch your homepage at 2AM fueled by wine and will power.

But sometimes? The thrills turns into terror.

Today, I’m gonna share with you some creepy corners of DIY branding – from typo tragedies to blurry logo blunders. These real-life horror stories are here to entertain (and warn) so your brand doesn’t end up cursed before Black Friday.

💀 1. The Sign That Said “Neutering Future Talent”

Yes. You read that right.

A well-meaning organization prepped a huge vinyl backdrop for a big event, meant to inspire youth. The message? “Nurturing Future Talent.” Except somewhere between copywriting and printing, the R took a coffee break… and the banner proudly read: “Neutering Future Talent.”

Nobody caught the typo before it went to print. The backdrop was installed. Photos were taken. The internet did its thing.

Takeaway:

Proofread everything. Have multiple eyeballs on it. And for anything going to print? Triple check. Then check again. Especially if you’re the one designing and approving.

🕸 2. The Logo That Looked Like a Pixelated Potato

One business owner proudly uploaded their DIY logo to a banner printing site… only to receive a billboard-sized blurry mess.

The problem? They used a low-res .jpg pulled from an old Instagram post (bless). What looked fine on their screen turned into a pixelated disaster when blown up to size.

Even worse, they had no idea what a vector file was, or that they even needed one.

Takeaway:

If you’re designing anything meant to scale (print, signs, merch), you must have the correct file formats. Think: vector (SVG, EPS, PDF), 300+ DPI, CMYK color mode. If this sounds like gibberish, it’s time to stop DIYing and start learning the lingo.

🧟‍♂️ 3. The Client Who Vanished… Then Returned With a Vengeance

A designer took on a tight-deadline project: branding for a conference overseas. The client promised quick content, logo files, and speaker photos. But after the kickoff call?

Crickets.

The client ghosted for weeks, then came back two days before the event, expecting everything to be finished and flawless.

What followed was an all-nighter, a flood of missing assets, and a PDF program that may or may not have been possessed.

Takeaway:

Whether you’re hiring a designer or flying solo, timelines matter. So do clear deliverables and accountability. Your brand can’t run on ghost vibes and last-minute scrambles.

👻 4. The Mystery Font Nobody Could Replace

One creative whipped up their own logo using a font they found somewhere online. No clue what it was called. No backup files. No font license. And no vector version.

Fast forward to needing to update their website, and surprise! They couldn’t recreate the logo because the font? It was custom-ish, maybe stolen, and definitely MIA.

So they either had to start from scratch… or live with a logo they couldn’t edit.

Takeaway:

When DIY-ing your brand, keep a running list of fonts, hex codes, files, and licenses. Save your originals. Back it all up. Otherwise, your brand identity can vanish faster than a Halloween flash sale.

Moral of the Story?

DIY design can be a beautiful thing—when you have the right tools, templates, and strategy. But if you’re cobbling together your brand from freebies, gut feelings, and last year’s Pinterest board… you’re playing with haunted house energy.
