SOCIAL WORKS

Founded by Grammy-award-winning musician and humanitarian Chance the Rapper, Social Works aims to empower the youth through the arts, education, and civic engagement. Since 2016, SocialWorks has created 5 initiatives that present youth the opportunity to learn and act on their passions. SocialWorks’ programming focuses on education, mental health, homelessness, and performing and literary arts – directly affecting thousands of youth yearly. Through the initiatives, OpenMike, Warmest Winter, Kids of the Kingdom, The New Chance: Arts & Literature Fund, and My State of Mind, SocialWorks hopes to inspire creativity, build dreams, and advocate for youth success in all its forms.

ABOUT WÄKE

Tyler Blake was inspired to create this streetwear clothing brand mid-2016 when he designed the “wake eye” a symbol symbolizing self love and self awareness. Tyler has always envisioned the streetwear clothing by wäke being available in designer retailers like Saks 5th and Neiman Marcus advocating for self love in the world of luxury fashion. Growing up on the south side of Chicago Tyler realized at an early age that it is the kids in the inner city that create the culture and ideology behind streetwear fashion.

WHY IT MATTERS.

Growing up in Chicago, IL I have witnessed first hand the direct impact of systematic oppression. I have witnessed how this cancer has sucked the life out of the black community, how we are born with all odds against us. Organizations like Social Works provides an opportunity for the youth in under privileged communities to express themselves through the arts, education, and civic engagement which is critical in my opinion! We need a safe heaven with leaders that set out to build the community and sow into lives. If it weren’t for the arts, who knows where I would be today.

– Tyler Blake

I have realized that I can be a voice for everyone that has experienced trauma in their lifetime, I can show that no matter what you’ve been through you can get back up and conquer the world. We are all one.
